Facts about Optic Atrophy
- Optic atrophy is defined as when the optic nerve has deteriorated and no longer sends nerve signals to the brain.
- It can exist with varying severity, causing anything from only slightly impaired vision to total blindness.
- It has many different possible causes, including inherited diseases, tumors, toxins, etc.
- The optic disk appears pale and small in size upon examination.
- Children with ONA may also present with other neurological disorders such as seizures and Cortical Visual Impairment.
